About two thousand years ago, the historic Silk Road, which connected China to Central Asia, Anatolia, and Europe, was one of the world’s most important economic networks, carrying not only trade but also culture, knowledge, and technology across continents. Starting from the Chinese city of Xi’an, this network consisted of numerous routes extending to Istanbul, Ephesus, Venice, and the ports of the Middle East.

Announced by the People’s Republic of China in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) emerged as one of the world’s largest economic integration projects, aiming to revive this historic legacy through modern transportation and logistics infrastructure.Today, the BRI is a global connectivity network made up of railways, ports, highways, energy lines, digital infrastructure, and logistics hubs. Over the years, the initiative has expanded to cover numerous countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America, turning into hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure investment.

Key Objectives of the Belt and Road Initiative

  • Strengthening trade corridors between China and Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

  • Making global supply chains more efficient and uninterrupted.

  • Creating new economic partnerships through infrastructure investments.

  • Channeling Chinese capital and industrial capacity into international projects.

  • Creating new markets by supporting regional economic development.

Türkiye’s Strategic PositionLocated at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, Türkiye is one of the natural logistics hubs of the Belt and Road Initiative. Its position on the Middle Corridor, advanced port infrastructure, railway connections, Customs Union with the European Union, and young, dynamic economy give Türkiye significant advantages.

Projects such as the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars Railway, Marmaray, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, the Eurasia Tunnel, Filyos Port, and logistics center investments further strengthen Türkiye’s role in international trade corridors.

On the other hand, for Türkiye to fully capitalize on this potential, the following are important:

  • digitalizing customs processes,

  • strengthening logistics infrastructure,

  • continuing reforms aimed at facilitating trade,

  • improving the international investment environment,

  • adapting to green transformation and digital trade practices.

Thanks to its geographical location, production capacity, and regional connections, Türkiye is among the countries that can benefit most from this transformation through the right policies and strategic investments. In the coming period, international partnerships to be established particularly in logistics, energy, manufacturing, finance, and technology offer significant opportunities to further strengthen Türkiye’s position in global trade.
